James Russell

James teaches a holistic approach to yoga that integrates a range of practical techniques such as mantra, kriya, asana, pranayama, meditation and relaxation. His classes are informed and inspired by the experiential philosophy of Patanjali’s yoga sutra.

James has studied yoga in Nepal, India and the UK. In India he trained at Yoga Vidya Gurukul, and in the UK with the Devon School of Yoga. His main yoga teacher is Duncan Hulin, with whom he has studied regularly for the past 17 years.

James has been teaching yoga since 2007 and teaches classes, courses, workshops and retreats in the South West of England. He is a teacher for the Devon School of Yoga and also a member of the team that organises the Devon Yoga Festival. He has taught yoga at the Royal Academy for Deaf Education and has also taught yoga to ex-offenders in recovery from drug and alcohol dependency.

James has a specialised interest in yoga as a means of purification and the bandha and breath based kriya method he has learnt from his teacher, in the tradition of Dr B.P. Pillai of Kerala.
